A former slave fighting for justice. A reclusive warrior who no longer believes it exists. And a dark magic that will entangle their fates.
Ripped from a forgotten homeland as a child, Tisaanah learned how to survive with nothing but a sharp wit and a touch of magic. But the night she tries to buy her freedom, she barely escapes with her life.
Desperate to save the best friend she left behind, Tisaanah journeys to the Orders, the most powerful organizations of magic Wielders in the world. But to join their ranks, she must complete an apprenticeship with Maxantarius Farlione, a handsome and reclusive fire wielder who despises the Orders.
The Orders’ intentions are cryptic, and Tisaanah must prove herself under the threat of looming war. But even more dangerous are her growing feelings for Maxantarius. The bloody past he wants to forget may be the key to her future… or the downfall of them both.
But Tisaanah will stop at nothing to save those she abandoned. Even if it means gambling in the Orders’ deadly games. Even if it means sacrificing her heart.
Even if it means wielding death itself. - Goodreads

Spoil Review:
Characters and Plot
I know that I am going to love this series, and I was RIGHT!!! It had been months since I've read a fantasy series that I felt invested in the characters, the stories, the plot, the side characters, just everything worked so well. Tisaanah is such a badass, and what makes her stand out is that she isn't a 'pick me' or some romantic lead who just refuses a good offer because of... Ye, you get me. Tisaanah is level-headed, full of determination, and isn't impulsive for the sake of being impulsive. She reminded me of Aelin in the best way: kind, funny, strong, and a will to create a better world.

I LOVE MAX SO MUCH. He is funny, sarcastic, slightly grumpy, and is so down bad for Tisaanah. What makes Max stand out to me is that he is actually complex, has his own personality, his own life, his own vision. A lot of MMC in fantasy, after they fall in love with the main FMC, they lose all their personality traits and their own goals. That's not Max; he still had a personality, a vision outside of just Tisaanah. Max's backstory was one of the most sickening things, though I did manage to guess his backstory before the actual reveal. I didn't expect it to be that graphic about the scene. The romance between Max and Tisaanah is one of my favorite things; it's natural, the chemistry was on fire, and the sarcastic banter between the two of them is just adorable.

The plot is so addicting, I love the process of Tisaanah training her magic, actually trials and errors, and competing in the Order test. Her inspiration to free the slaves in Threll was admirable. I found her journey to be powerful and inspiring. Tisaanah battling with Reshaye in her head while also using Reshaye's power reminded me of Rin and the Phoenix in the Poppy War, but makes it happier.

Nura is such an interesting character; on one hand, she is a cold, ambitious person, and on the other is a ruthless character who has betrayed so many people. Sammerin is def on my top list of favorite characters. He is sarcastically funny, has a great bromance with Max, and a comedic relationship with his apprentice, Moth. Who is so adorable!!!

Conclusion
Overall, I AM SO GLAD THIS LIVES UP TO THE HYPE! I cannot wait to continue this series and see how Tisaanah and Max's journey unfolds.
