Now a senior in high school, Percy Jackson needs three letters of reference from the Greek gods in order to get admitted to New Rome University. He obtained Ganymede's chalice to earn his first one. The goddess Hecate has now given Percy another "opportunity": he just needs to pet sit her polecat, Gale, and mastiff, Hecuba, during the week of Halloween while she is gone. Easy, isn't it?

Grover, Annabeth, and Percy move into Hecate's seemingly infinite mansion and begin to get to know the grumpy, frightful animals. Despite being told not to touch anything, Grover can't help but drink a strawberry-flavored potion in the lab while Percy and Annabeth are out at school. He becomes a huge, crazed goat as a result, and Hecuba and Gale flee when he runs through the home, destroying everything in his path, and faints. Before Hecate returns on Saturday, the friends must now locate Hecate's pets and find a way to fix the house. It’s going to take luck, demigod wiles, and some old and new friends to hunt down the animals and set things right again.

SPOILS ALERT!

General Opinion

I had a fun time reading this book, it had moments where it cracked me up a lot. However, it is not jaw-dropping compared to Rick's other book, but it is a fun read. â€‹

Characters

Percy being Percy as always, is funny, a comedic relief, and remains the most iconic MC in Rick Riordan's books. But one thing that I found odd in this book was how Percy repetitively thought that he was dumb when he rarely showed this kind of thought in previous books. If you read Percy Jackson, you know that Percy isn't dumb, he is smart and a quick thinker. However, Percy was still the Percy I know.

Annabeth, my girl, slay as usual. And I love her relationship with Percy, they are THE couple's goal. Annabeth also recognized that Percy was smart, and praised him for it, which I thought was sweet. I also like how Percy was the one to help her grow from her flaw of being too prideful, and at the end of the book, Annabeth admits her mistake to Percy.

Grover was the only person in this book whom I saw was really out of character. Grover almost got the 3 of them killed by using a strawberry-flavor potion, and he admits to somehow doing it on purpose because he doesn't want Percy and Annabeth to leave him for college. Even though I understand Grover's concern, I still found his act reckless and selfish. Even though Grover did make it up later in the book, it was a very not Grover move.

Plot

My favorite part of this story is that it shows Gale and Hecuba's backstory, where they aren't merely pets, but people that went through hardship. Percy's understanding of them was heartwarming, and Hecate's agreement to treat them better was refreshing to see in a God since most of them are entitled and immature.

Conclusion

Overall, it was a fun read, and I would recommend it to children, the book has a lot of jokes and cute and heart-warming moments. But doesn't live up to Rick's other books, so I would hope his next book would be better than this.
