Ordinary-born Paedyn Gray, who survived the Purging Trials, killed the King and ignited a nationwide resistance movement. She is now fleeing from the one person she intended to flee to.

Kai Azer, who is devoted to his brother Kitt, the new King, is now Ilya's Enforcer. He has promised to track down Paedyn and arrest her.

Kai follows the one person he wishes he didn't have to, deep within the hostile city of Dor and across the lethal Scorches. However, the hunter-hunted dynamic changes in a city without elites, and the conflict between duty and desire can be fatal.

Enjoy this kiss-or-kill romantic trilogy that is sweeping the globe.

SPOILS ALERT:

If you read my last blog post on Powerless, you will know I'm not a huge fan of it. But despite this, I am curious about how the story will continue, so I read the second book: Reckless, hoping it will be better. It did not...

The plot of this story is repetitive throughout the novel, with Paedyn swearing that she hates Kai with all her heart and that she won't fail to kill him just for Kai to flirt and taunt her, capturing her, just for Paedyn to escape him, but then got recapture again by Kai. This situation was repeated twice. The first one was when the Resistance rescued Paedyn from Kai and his Imperials. The second one was  Paedyn and Kai got captured by Rafael, the master of pit fights in Dor. No surprise, they escaped, and the moment Paedyn thought that she could somehow trust Kai again, he chained her to him.

Now, that plot could have been great if it wasn't for the repetition of "I want to kill him/her", "I hate him/her", and "I'm going to kill him the next time"... It would be ok if it was mention once or twice, but this was brought up every page for half of the book that I roll my eyes. That was why I was so glad Kitt's chapters came up, I know a lot of people think his chapters were boring and useless. But I think it gives up a glimpse of a new side of Kitt, and he lets get a break from Paedyn and Kai. I love Kitt in Powerless and I hope he won't turn into a villain.

However, the story did get better at the end half. My favorite moment was when Kai found out his father had carved a scar on Paedyn, branding her an Ordinary. Kai comfort her by "opening his arms", allowing Paedyn to crawl on his lap and released her tears. I felt this moment was really sweet and wholesome, that their is something real in their relationship rather than holding a knife to each other throat. I also enjoy the moment when Paedyn and Kai are making flower crowns out of petals, and Kai fails to do so, ending with them laughing. This scene seems like a breath of fresh air to me, how they leave the fact that Kai still had to bring Paedyn back, and are just a silly couple at the moment, it was probably the most adorable scene in the book.

The ending was... Kitt threw a surprise ceremony for Kai. I just hope that Kitt will get out of his grief and anger and return to the sweet Kitt that I love in Powerless. So I would read the final book in the trilogy to see how the story ends, cause the ending leaves me curious. There is also a shocking reveal of Paedy heritage in the story, which I won't spoil, but it did give us an emotional moment between her and Kai.

Overall, it was again, a fun read. But I don't think the story would get better, yet seeing how this is Lauren Roberts's second book, I had high hopes that she would improve in the future.
